Roxanne Bland grew up in Washington, D.C. As a child, she spent an inordinate amount of time prowling the museums of the Smithsonian Institution. She also spent an inordinate amount of time reading. Her favorite place to read was in bed, and one of her happiest memories is of having created a bookshelf on her bed, filled with her currently-reading and to-be-read books.
She learned to play the piano at age seven, and over the years became an accomplished pianist. She attended the Duke Ellington High School of the Performing Arts, where, in between classes, she played the piano to her heart’s content. Her parents were quite forbearing with her musical aspirations, as at home, she would practice for hours on end, the same piece over and over. The long practice sessions were imperative, because her last piano teacher was the Russian master, Basil Toutorsky, who though kind, was exacting, and would not tolerate a student who did not practice her lessons.
After graduating from high school, she attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. From Smith, she headed to New York City. She lived in New York for over two years, then moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane Law School. After law school, she returned to Washington, D.C. In 2001, she became serious about writing, and after years spent learning the craft, she published her first book in 2013. In 2017, she placed as a finalist in the Readers’ Book Awards for her novel, The Underground: Second Edition.
Ms. Bland is enamored of Great Danes, and has been owned by several. She lives in Rosedale, Maryland with her current owner, Daisy Mae.
The Underground: Second Edition
Paranormal, Science Fiction, Romance
Roxanne Bland does bestselling authors Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, J.R. Ward, and Laurell K. Hamilton one better with The Underground—rocketing into the upper ranks of urban dark fantasy and paranormal romance by adding a touch of science fiction to the fantastic, horrific, erotic mix.
Set in an alternate Seattle, Washington, Bland’s heart-pounding, deliciously sexy adventure imagines a city where communities of “exotics”—shapeshifters, witches, elves, and vampires—live among the murderous human population and are ruled over by the cruel, insatiable vampire, Kurt. The powerful alpha male of the city’s werewolf pack, Parker Berenson, is one of the Master’s enslaved servants, and he would like nothing better than to hasten the downfall of the vampire overlord who stole his love, the beautiful mage Garrett Larkin. But in a night city already on the razor’s edge—in the midst of a spate of inexplicable bloody murders—the alpha wolf’s passionate encounter with a stunning interstellar assassin could upset the very delicate balance and ignite a war that neither exotics nor humans can survive. paranormal fantasy/science fiction
The tryst—a potent spell—had worked to quell the riots between humans and exotics—zots—but for the three powerful zots who had cast it, it nearly meant their destruction. Entangled now not just by their past loves and jealousies, their auras, now entwined, were bound when the well-intended tryst went terribly wrong.
Each has acquired powers, but each also has much to lose. Kurt, vampire regent and Master of Seattle, has developed the formidable magickal abilities of a mage, but at the price of his native powers weakening. While he can’t afford for humans to discover his true identity, the growing diminishment of his vampiric might is making it that much harder to hide. Not only is he at risk of being unmasked, but he must now face a potential threat to his Seattle reign from within the ranks of his own.
Garrett Larkin, the mastermind of the tryst and beautiful mage of Seattle’s Balthus Coven, has acquired a horrifying craving for blood and destruction like her former lover and tryst partner, Parker Berenson, the powerful leader of the werewolf pack. Parker has his own problems, not the least of which is his affections for Melera, an alien assassin on the run from her arch nemesis who wants to destroy her and enslave all of Earth.
Drawn together by choice and fate while doing what they had to do, can they now undo the wrongs or will it be too late for all of them and Earth?
