Self-Publishing is becoming the norm, and it is the same in the music industry, which I've spent a good deal of my life being involved in. The big music producers only take on a small handful of people and you may be the most talented singer/songwriter ever born, but they aren't going to give you the time of day until you prove yourself to them that you can make THEM money. Then, the minute you stop making THEM money, they drop you like a hot potato and you're back to playing casinos and bars.
You will find the same scenario with the major publishing houses. They have to make money to stay in business. Anyone does. Yes, you stand a chance of being picked up by a smaller publishing house, who will most likely re-write your script to the point you no longer recognize it and than pay you pennies for the work. But, then you can say you've been traditionally published.
When I made the decision to create RiJan Publishing, it was from the standpoint of the author (which I am, first and foremost and very proud to bear that title). I suppose it is a "vanity" publishing house in that the author pays for professional services, but what sets it apart from others is my burning desire to see self-published works done in a professional manner that compares to a traditional publishing house. The difference being, that the author remains 100% in control of the work from beginning to end.
