Jonathan Mills
I grew up in Somerset, England, an area rich in history, myth, and story-telling. It's where Alfred the Great hid from the Danes in the Ninth Century, where the Duke of Monmouth led the Pitchfork Rebellion against James II in 1685, where countless ghosts, witches and giants have stalked the hills and marshes for thousands of years.
"The Witch of Glenaster", "The Widow's Thorn" and "The Ghosts of Glenaster" are inspired by these stories, and also by writers such as Ursula Le Guin, Kevin Crossley-Holland, and J.R.R. Tolkien. |
The Witch of Glenaster
Fantasy
Esther Lanark lives in the shadow of the White Mountain, high on the slopes above the River Anvil, in the southern regions of the known world. Her life is a hard but happy one, but everywhere the shadow of the Witch of Glenaster is spreading across the land, and when their village is destroyed by fire drakes, Esther and her brother Magnus must journey to the far north, encountering swordsmen, wraiths, strange cults, and man-eating insects, in a desperate and increasingly dangerous quest to kill the Witch, and take their revenge. |
The Widow's Thorn
Fantasy
Nearly a year has passed since Esther Lanark fought the Witch of Glenaster, but she is still not safe. As ward of the empire's most powerful man, she is effectively a prisoner, until an old friend appears, and tells her that Magnus, her brother, may still be alive - and that she is in greater danger now than ever. Who can she trust, and how will she escape, when so many people want her dead? |
The Ghosts of Glenaster
Fantasy
Thomas Taper has returned from the nameless lands, to the joy of Esther Lanark and her friends - yet a shadow hangs over him, and over the empire, as news arrives from the capital that the emperor is dead. Many powerful people covet the crown, but none are more dangerous than Lord Anguis, a sorcerer from the Spike Lands, a distant and strange country at the very edges of the known world. As the awful truth about Lord Anguis begins to emerge, Esther and Thomas realize that they must journey together once more, to find a lord from a forgotten house who may hold the key to saving the empire. But this lord has his own secrets, and Thomas, too, is not the man he was – can Esther save him, and herself, from the darkness that threatens to engulf them all? |
