Empty Soul for Hire
murder, mystery, suspense, action
James H. Waggoner’s stunning suspense novel Empty Soul for Hire explores a hidden world of murder, betrayal, and greed where Lance Goodman has carved out a lucrative career torturing and killing the enemies of a select and savagely vindictive clientele. The tale’s protagonist, in the tenth year of his one-man reign of terror, is a man at war with himself and the world around him. To others, Lance appears ordinary despite the monstrous deeds he commits. Perhaps he reflects the monster lurking inside us all, kept at bay only by circumstance and good fortune. Waggoner’s netherworld heavies circle one another like scorpions in a calculated dance of death, knowing the contest is zero-sum: in each encounter only one survives. By chance, Lance meets Jordan Hughes, a beautiful and self-sufficient young woman who seems to offer him refuge and a way to escape the demons devouring him from within. Empty Soul for Hire is an exciting story of malice, deception, and brutal revenge. But it is also a story of compassion, humanity, and the miracle of redemption through love. Once you’ve read it, you won’t forget it. |
The Wages of Sin
murder, mystery, suspense, action
The Wages of Sin is James H. Waggoner's powerful sequel to Empty Soul for Hire, his alarming tale of greed and vengeance in Los Angeles. Once more, the author's focus is on Lance Goodman, a vicious freelance avenger who makes big money torturing and killing the enemies of wealthy clients. Lance is a man adrift in a world with no safe harbor. His cover as a legitimate businessman shields him from the law, but he remains at the mercy of a swarm of demons that torment his barren soul. Abandoned in childhood by his uncaring father and resentful of his weak and needful mother, Lance grew up desperately wanting to be loved but unable to love others. His fumbling attempts at love predictably backfire. His relations with women are strictly sexual. His occupational paranoia makes honesty impossible. A bizarre attempt to build a family by abducting the young daughters of one of his victims is doomed to failure. The Wages of Sin delivers an ominous warning: the unloved soul is easy prey to sins of malice and cruelty. With the inevitability of Greek tragedy, Lance Goodman's demons propel his story to its explosive and bloody conclusion. |
