- The Independent Author Network SHORT STORY COMPETITION is an international competition open to all authors.
- The competition opens April 1, 2017.
- The winner receives $1,000 and five Honorable Mentions receive $100 each.
- Up to 15 shortlisted (finalist) entries will be published in an anthology eBook. Royalties from the anthology will be donated to Firstbook.org.
- There are no theme or genre restrictions.
- Entries must be in English.
- There is a $14.95 USD entry fee for each story submitted.
- The length is 1,000 to 5,000 words.
- The pages should be numbered and the word count on the title page.
- The closing date is Friday October 6, 2017 and entries will be accepted up to midnight on that date.
- Entries should be submitted electronically through the contest entry form.
- Hard copies must be submitted by post.
- All submissions must be the writer’s original work.
- Copyright remains with the author.
- The story may be published elsewhere as long as the author retains all rights.
- The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence can be entered into.
- Entry implies permission for your story to be published in an anthology of shortlisted entries.
- The shortlist (finalists) will be announced December 15, 2017 and winners announced and contacted on January 15, 2018.

There is murder, humor, golf, food, and local color in this tale, as well as twists and some interesting characters. Beautiful desert willows grow wild in the area around Willowtree, contributing to the stability of the land and the sustenance of wildlife. So does a certain weed that can be used in sinister ways. This is a cozy mystery, meaning it contains no explicit sex, obscene language, or gory violence.
