George A. DeFrehn III
George was born in "West Philly," Philadelphia, PA, to be precise. Before retirement, he worked in the healthcare industry for 30-plus years after graduating from LaSalle University. He attained his M.A. in Human Services Administration from Rider University in New Jersey and taught there as an Adjunct Professor for five years.
In October 2023, George wrote and published his first novel, The Judas Tree - Book 1. If you love great characters, a plausible plot set in 2075, and dystopian literature... You'll love this first of a trilogy that you won't soon forget.
In 1997, George had an epiphany that changed his life. He discovered he was an alcoholic! No, he did not drink every day; was never arrested for a DUI; never lost a job due to his drinking; no one ever told him to stop drinking. You see, George was what some call a "functional alcoholic." He had a six-figure job, a beautiful wife, five wonderful kids and lived in a huge home overlooking a meandering creek in Bucks County, PA. Life on the outside looked grand. But on the inside... life was dark. Yet, through reading a memoir of another drunk, he discovered he had that same disease. He then wrote his first non-fiction book: Is Anybody There? Memoir of a "Functional Alcoholic," which was a Finalist for the Eric Hoffer Award in 2016.
George still lives in the Philly area with his bride of many years. Those five kids are all grown and have blessed him with eleven grandkids who call him "Pop,"... which melts his heart. He's taken up writing in his retirement. The Judas Tree – Book 2 will be published in 2024. He is also working on his first children's book, If School Buses Could Talk, again looking for publication in 2024.

The Judas Tree - Book 1
Dystopian, Apocalyptic
It’s almost midnight. London. Misty snow has been falling throughout the day in the English capital. The day’s final flights have landed at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. All air traffic in and around London has ceased. The streets appear deserted. The doors of Harrods, St. Paul’s, and Westminster Abbey are locked. A few homeless wander Piccadilly Circus and King’s Cross Station, searching for scraps of food or coins dropped by the drunks leaving the pubs. The bartender and staff at The Dickens Inn loiter over a few pints of Guinness near the Tower Bridge. The bartender tells all to get home safely. The Inn closed an hour ago. Two thousand kilometers away from the River Thames, a woman stands on a rooftop looking out over frigid waters where the Norwegian and North Seas merge. Droplets of freezing rain assault her beautiful but unsmiling and stoic face. She has put in motion an evil that can never be walked back. Military drones, cloaked so as not to be detected by radar, carry the deadliest inhalation virus known to humankind. Nothing can stop her. The cold air bites her skin. The clock tower strikes 23:59 hours Greenwich Mean Time. “IT IS TIME.” |
Is Anybody There? Memoir of a "Functional Alcoholic"
Memoir
He is respected in his community. He is a man of faith. He never had a DUI, spent a night in jail, lost a job due to his drinking, and was never admitted to a rehab facility. He had never been told by a friend or foe that he was an alcoholic, and he never purposely hurt anyone while drinking...or so he thought. This is the memoir of a college-educated businessperson who made significant income and owned many material "things." It has both humorous and tragic elements describing the author's journey from alcoholism to sobriety. By faith, fortune, or just dumb luck, he walked into a bookstore on his way to his vacation home and discovered a best seller written by a white-collar, educated female journalist from New England that saved his life. Well, that is NOT the entire story. Several other people had their hand in his salvation from the disease of alcoholism--a man named Tom, who met the author in Bosnia, an alcoholic in recovery nicknamed "Gandhi," and eventually two Native Americans named here as Running Badger and Bear. So…if you or a loved one believes that you are having an issue with booze, this book may be for you. |
The Best Sermons You've NEVER Heard
Spiritual/Inspirational Non-Fiction
Too often in today’s world, we receive a vanilla version of the Word of God from our preachers, regardless of faith or denomination. Warm and fuzzy sermons make people happy. Watered-down theology upsets no one. Yet, the Carpenter from Nazareth, Jesus the Christ, gave us an unvarnished version of the Father’s Word. He was radical and revolutionary in His message: “Forgive your enemies!” “Pray for those who persecute you!” “Judge no one, and you will not be judged.” Jesus called the religious leaders of His time hypocrites because they refused to walk the talk. This Yeshua (Jesus in Hebrew) was born in a cave and was buried in a friend’s tomb. While preaching the Good News of His Father, He comforted the sick, the widow, and the orphan. He “hung out” with tax collectors, adulterers, lepers... and some of the other misfits of society. He made the lame walk, the deaf hear, and the blind see. For this, the Carpenter was nailed to a tree between two thieves on a Friday we still call Good. |
