I am a semi-retired psychiatric nurse who has worked in Knowle Hospital from the 1970s and in St. James, Portsmouth as well as for several years in the community teams looking after people with Drug and Alcohol problems.

Since retiring from nursing full time I have achieved a BA(hons) in English Literature and Creative Arts and an MA in Creative Writing, both from Portsmouth University. The first half of my first novel, Caught in the Web was my dissertation for the MA for which I achieved a Merit.

My passions are writing, acting, playwriting and costumes. I enjoy public performances and meeting people. I write as Southwickwriterwoman,blogspot.com on my blog which is evolving into a forum for my poetry as well as other writings.

I have facilitated Creative Writing groups at both Phoenix House drug and alcohol rehabilitation unit and at St. James Hospital mental health low secure unit, Portsmouth.

I am at present working on my second novel.

Psychological thriller

When Karen survives life-threatening surgery, she wakes with a new sense of purpose, but her determination to change her life leads her into a danger she could never have imagined. Karen's story begins in England in the 1970s, four years after her wedding to Peter. As she is recovering from surgery, her plans to pursue a career in mental health nursing are met with disapproval from Peter who has always made the important decisions in their lives. Going against his wishes, Karen throws herself into her job. The work is frightening at times but exciting. Unaware of the danger building at home, she witnesses many of the horrors of life in a mental hospital in the 1970s. In particular, she relates to Evelyn who was admitted to the ward over twenty years ago after giving birth to an illegitimate baby.

A story of how two women overcome adversity at a time when, despite womens' lib, men still were very much in control.
