The Happiness of Truth
contemporary fiction
It's 1976 and Valentine Scott is preoccupied with two loves: A guy named Jack Anderson and the desire to write great stories. Flash-forward a few years, and she's a photographer, married to Will Sampson and in love with nothing. This about-face comes on the heels of a devastating accident that leaves her cowering in the corner of her former passions. She stumbles through years of domestic doubt —fleeing to Napa at the height of her discontent, where she unexpectedly runs into Jack and learns some unsettling truths about her life and the ambiguity of her morality. As Valentine's story moves between a past that has devoured her heart and a present that demands her soul, we are caught up in her unflinching quest for joy. We witness the seeds of truth take root and wait for her to discover that the bloom of happiness is a choice not easily cultivated but once flowered, impossible to destroy. |
