Anna Ilyina

Born near Moscow, Russian Federation, I graduated from two universities, and I’ve got a PhD in Engineering and a diploma in Linguistics. For a long time I had worked as a technical project consultant, but then I changed my profession. Since 2003 I've been working as a technical translator and a literary one.

Shame Heirs

Picture
Constant dripping wears away stones. Constant hatred wears away souls. The protagonists are ashamed of true love, and such a shame they transmit to their heirs.

The novel is about how shame is passed down in a family over the generations. It is also about how people don’t live their own lives and prefer to exist in a world of handmade images and illusions. The characters use shame to pull each other down, to humiliate those who are weaker, but they haven’t the courage to toss a challenge to somebody who can make himself useful for them.

The novel is philosophical and thought-provoking. It is full of allegorical figures and meaning. The characters in the novel go by descriptive names such as "Girl", "Madam" and "Monsieur".

Events that take place in life of protagonists are seasoned with the monologues of the unborn child – another heir – who comes to his mother in a dream shyly. He shares his impressions with her, speaking about mortal life; he takes his detached view and he feels himself perplexed with actions made by people.

The humour in this book is at the same time subtle and yet also obvious in the way that it is thus able to expose the psychology of human nature in the raw and also in all its horror.
