Richard Schalhamer

Picture
WindySunPublishing
Richard Schalhamer was a high school physics teacher before becoming a full-time writer. He has been recognized with numerous honors at both the local and national levels, including “Teacher of the Year” awards in both categories. He retired from teaching after 25 years to fulfill a lifelong dream to become a writer.

He has kept a journal since high school, so much of his writing is based on real-life events and real people from these well-documented accounts. He has lived more fully than most and has embarked on countless adventures, thereby acquiring a wealth of knowledge and memories to draw upon for inspiration.

His primary passion is crafting romance and adventure stories, but two of his five published books have been historical fiction. He has also written many children's books for his two boys, classroom physics adventures, physics textbooks, and songs.

In the past, he has written for friends and students, but has decided to share his writings and thoughts with the rest of the world.

Raging Waters

Picture
Historical Fiction

“We all clung to the overturned surfboat. The 60 mph winds were creating waves 12 feet high, as Ice and sleet coated the portion of our bodies exposed above the water. Pottenger was the first to perish from the cold: he dropped his face into the water, let go of his handhold, and we drifted slowly away from him. The cold was too much for the rest of the men, and one after another gave out just as Pottenger had. Lake Huron swallowed all six men before we reached the reef.”

This was an all-too-common scene as a United States Life-Saving Service member on the Great Lakes during the late 1800’s.

My grandfather joined the Life-Saving Service at an early age. His journal, found in one of my mother's steamer trunks, inspired me to write a short story about one of these adventures. When my readers wanted more, I created this book. Thanks to my grandfather's journal, stories passed down by my mother, and extensive research, I have made this account as a collection of real people, accurate history, and actual events. If you enjoy true-to-life adventures mixed with the excitement of romance, you will love reading this book.

The Loudhammers

Picture
Historical Fiction

This is a story about the struggles of a typical European family that started their journey in Lithuania during the mid-1600s. The people are real, the dates are real, and the history is real. The rest is an account of what did happen, what might have happened, or what should have happened. If you have ancestors who immigrated to America from Europe, you will relate to this book. If you are a history person interested in the last few centuries of European history, you will enjoy this book. If you are a fellow Lithuanian or a Schalhamer, you will cherish this book.

Going Forward

Picture
Adventure/Romance

Rick is a Vietnam Vet who is about ready to be discharged from the Army. He has ahead of him a long-awaited taste of freedom, which has been absent in his life for the past three years. Mary is a small-town girl born and raised in Lake City, Florida. She has just finished two years at the local community college and is ready to escape to the big city to finish her degree. Their life plans have been put on hold when they meet and fall in love. The struggle is that neither one of them is willing to give up their dreams. They then embark on a wild love affair and a series of summer adventures to mask the eventual parting.

“Going Forward” is a story based on real people and actual events. The primary setting takes place in Central Florida along the Icetucknee River in the early 1970s. This is a romance/adventure story, which is typically written for women. “Going Forward” is, however, written from a man’s perspective, so both men and women will be able to enjoy the romance and appreciate the adventures.

Multi-Fariousness

Picture
Short Story/Poetry

The inspiration for this collection of stories and poems was mainly derived from actual events and real characters. Throughout history, whether someone told stories around a primitive campfire, hearth, cookstove, or television-illuminated couch, they were based upon real happenings and real people. Whether you call these stories, poems, sagas, or scribbles, you can be assured that they all hold a place in my memory, significantly enough that I felt they should be shared.
